Penguins team up with Environmental Charter School for special contest

The Environmental Charter School (ECS) in Pittsburgh has enthusiastically embraced the can recycling pledge, partnering with Iceburgh, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ beloved mascot, to champion environmental sustainability. This collaboration is part of the national 2 Million Cans Recycling Contest, which encourages students to collect and recycle aluminum beverage cans, promoting awareness of aluminum’s recyclability and supporting sustainability education.

As of March 18, ECS second graders have collected nearly 42,000 cans, demonstrating remarkable dedication to their recycling goals. The initiative was celebrated with a pep rally featuring educational presentations on aluminum can production and recycling, prize giveaways, and special appearances by Iceburgh and ECS’s own Hero the Hawk.

The Pittsburgh Penguins further supported the students’ efforts by donating all aluminum beverage cans and cups from their March 18 “Penguins Pledge” sustainability game to ECS, bolstering the school’s recycling objectives.

This partnership exemplifies how community collaboration can inspire environmental action among young students, fostering a commitment to sustainability that extends beyond the classroom.
