We 💖 our readers and recyclers! ♻️

Bullitt County, KY — Mt. Washington Elementary students, particularly the third-grade class, have taken the lead in an incredible environmental effort as part of The 2 Million Cans Recycling Contest. Their ambitious goal? Collecting 150,000 aluminum beverage cans to promote sustainability and protect our planet’s ecosystems.

With strong support from the school and local community, these young environmental champions have already reached a major milestone—collecting 75,000 cans! This achievement earns them a well-deserved pizza party celebration, generously provided by Recycling is Like Magic.

Beyond just collecting cans, Mt. Washington Elementary students are embedding the principles of recycling into their learning, recognizing the direct impact waste management has on plants, animals, and the environment.

"We are incredibly proud of our students for their leadership and determination in this effort," said MWES Assistant Principal Julie Adams. "Our third graders have truly embraced the importance of recycling, and it’s inspiring to see them take action to make a difference in our community."

BCPS Superintendent Dr. Jesse Bacon also applauded the students' efforts, stating, "This project is a great example of how learning extends beyond the classroom. These students are not only developing important skills like goal-setting and teamwork, but they are also becoming responsible, engaged citizens who understand the impact they can have on the world around them."

As they continue toward their ambitious goal of 150,000 cans, these students are demonstrating the power of being Community Contributors who recognize a need and take action to positively impact their surroundings. These students are also demonstrating skills as Innovative Problem Solvers, analyzing solutions to environmental challenges, and as Self-Directed Navigators, setting goals and taking steps to achieve them. Their work is a testament to the power of hands-on learning and community collaboration!

As they continue toward their ambitious goal, we celebrate their perseverance, leadership, and commitment to making a difference—one can at a time!
