Logan County Students Take Recycling to the Next Level with Support from Logan Aluminum
Students at Lewisburg Elementary in Logan County, Kentucky, are leading the way in environmental education through a hands-on recycling project. Thanks to a partnership between Logan Aluminum, Cumberland Scrap, and the Can Manufacturers Institute, these students are participating in the national 2 Million Cans Recycling Contest.

The goal? Collect and recycle millions of aluminum cans while learning real-world lessons about sustainability, teamwork, and environmental stewardship.

“We want to raise awareness for the kids and give them the tools they need to build lifelong recycling habits at school and at home,” said Laura Haury, Environmental Engineer at Logan Aluminum.

Throughout the school year, students will collect empty aluminum cans, sell them to local scrap yards, and earn money and prizes for their school. Beyond the financial incentive, the program teaches students the value of recycling and connects classroom learning with real-world action.

“We’re excited to partner with Logan Aluminum and Cumberland Scrap to bring these additional learning opportunities to our students,” said Grant Warren, Principal at Lewisburg Elementary. “Our kids love connecting with people outside the school and taking part in something bigger.”

Now in its second year, the contest has grown from an original one million can goal to a nationwide push for two million cans, involving 16 schools across 12 states. To make it easier for the community to participate, Lewisburg Elementary has even created an after-hours can drop-off site behind the school.

“This program helps students see how small actions—like recycling a single can—add up to make a big impact,” said Haury. “It’s about sustainability, but it’s also about jobs, revenue, and supporting the local economy.”

Principal Warren added, “Our teachers do an amazing job creating project-based learning that’s meaningful. The students are excited to share their work with classmates and the community, making the learning experience even stronger.”
